Obituary for Deaconess Christine Stenson

Deaconess Christine Stenson
Christine Yvonne Simon-Stenson was born June 6, 1942 in Washington, DC to the late Jack and Eula Rich. Christine was raised in Manning, South Carolina by her grandparents the late Moses and Sarah Simon. She was educated in the Manning Public School System. Christine was also active in the Pinegrove AME Church and the surrounding community of Manning.
Christine relocated to New York in 1964 where she received a lot of love and support from her late Aunt Rosalie Carr and her Aunt Ruth Lee. She graduated from Hunter College with her certification as a Dietitian. She worked at Creedmoor Psychiatric Center for seven years and Montauk Daycare Center for 25 years.
1976 she married the late Johnathan Stenson in Tallahassee, Florida. Christine had a generous spirit, always loving, kind and willing to give a helping hand to the less fortunate. She wore a contagious smile and bubbly personality. She had a passion for children becoming a foster parent to numerous young people; that was her caring and compassionate nature. She also had a deep appreciation for art becoming an amateur artist; some of her paintings were hung in her Aunt Rosalie’s home. She was family oriented assisting any and all family members in the many ventures and adventures that they might undertake. She loved joking with her family and enjoying a good laugh. Christine adored her two god-children, the late Tawan Simon and Reggie Simon.
Deaconess Stenson was reinstated to Bethany Baptist Church in 1982. She was a dedicated Deaconess, faithful president of the Pastor Aide for many years and devoted assistant to Deacon Otis Thomas with the Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry until he transitioned. Then she stepped up and took the lead in that ministry until her health failed. She continued to assist the Ministry even from her rehab center room. The Food Ministry was dear to her heart, she believed in helping the under privileged by cooking, feeding and serving them, putting a bag of food in their hands or feeding them a hot meal. The Food Ministry received numerous awards and accolades under her leadership. She also admired each and every member of the Food Ministry because they were always there in her time of need and they are dedicated to the cause of Christ. She loved Bethany Baptist Church and her church family.
She leaves to cherish her life and legacy, her three sons, Kenneth (Kim), Anthony, and Julian (Audrea), one Sister Elizabeth Murphy of Augusta, South Carolina; two uncles Louis Carr of Jamaica, New York and Joseph Simon of Washington, DC; two Aunts Ruth Lee of Jamaica, New York and Lula Houston of Manning, South Carolina; two step-children, John and Melody Stenson; one god-son, Reggie Simon; seventeen grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousin. She held a special place in her heart for Ms. Louise Chestang and Sis. Geraldine Crenshaw.
