Obituary for Gertrude Pulliam

Gertrude Pulliam
Gertrude Pulliam was born on March 7, 1935, in Toccoa, Georgia to the late Leo and Ovis Pulliam.

She moved to New York City in the 40’s. She was educated in the New York City school system, and graduated from high school early. Although she had many college offers she declined them to care for her baby brother.

She worked for Berkey Photo in NYC where she met her late husband, Sonny McKenzie. From that union they had one son.

She later worked for New York State at the Brooklyn Developmental Center, as a safety officer. She retired in 2000 as Chief Safety officer with 28 years of service.

Gertrude loved all kinds of sports. She especially liked the New York Giants and the Knicks. She enjoyed going to the Casino and she was an avid reader. Gertrude was loved by everyone who came in contact with her. She had a kind and generous spirit, often opening her heart and home to others.

She departed this life on November 18, 2014 after a long illness. She is survived by her son, Brian Mckenzie, her devoted brother, Hassan Abdul Sharif, Sister in law, Deborah, one niece, Robin (Sharon), four nephews, Darrell, Kerry, Kenneth, Duane, and a host of great nieces nephews, relatives and friends.

We celebrate her life and thank God for the memories.
