Obituary for Sally Louise Day

Sally Louise Day
Peacefully in the early morning of November 19th, 2014, in her ninety-second year, Sally Louise Day was called home following several months of failing health.

Sally, affectionately known to most as Louise, was born in Georgia to the late Hattie Mae Shurley and William Walker on March 16, 1922. She was the eldest of two children. Louise and her brother Clifford were raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. After graduating from High School, she moved to Atlanta to find work. Work was slow in Atlanta, so in the early 1940's she migrated to New York in search of a better opportunity.

Once in New York Louise enrolled in a Nursing program and became a Practical Nurse. During this time she met and later married Joe Day in 1948. She worked in hospitals, caring for various types of patients but her true love was caring for children. After numerous rewarding years of nursing service, she had to stop due to problems with her legs. By this time Louise and Joe had grown tired of the city life Harlem had to offer, and relocated to Hollis, Queens.

Louise was a people person, she loved to talk, tell stories and offer advice if needed. She was a warm caring person who at times went without to help others in need. Her love of children culminated when she became a daycare provider for the Catholic Guardian Society of Queens. She poured every bit of herself into the children she cared for. Louise was lovingly dubbed "Mama Day", by both the children and their parents. She touched and shaped many lives during her time as a daycare provider, and continued to keep in touch with many of the children and parents she cared for. She was adored and respected by family and friends for her wisdom and knowledge.

Louise was a great cook, and loved to bake. Holiday time was her favorite, as she made fruitcakes and pound cakes for family and friends. During the final decade of her life, she was once again stricken with the "leg problems" that ended her nursing career. For many years this had been an ongoing battle for her, but advanced age and decreased mobility made it more of a challenge. The family would like to thank those who took the time out to make visits and calls to her during this most trying time, always reminding her that gone (from home) did not mean forgotten. She drew her last breath, not alone but with those she loved, and who loved her.

Louise rarely complained and one of her favorite sayings was "If you don't have anything good to say, then don't say anything at all". She will be greatly, greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She is predeceased by a son Leslie Jerome Day, a loving husband of forty-four years Joe Day, and a brother Clifford Walker. She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter in love Janie; her grandchildren in love Sherry, Charlie, Anthony, Derrick and Dena; grandson in law David, granddaughter in law Kirin; great grandchildren in love Noel, Rashawn, Joseph, Andrew, Laila, Deon and Zion; a wonderful niece Jean and her family, a cousin Wanda; a Godson Reggie; and a host of friends and neighbors of whom she thought the world, and who thought the world of her.
