Mr. General W. Abney Jr., son of the late General and Tweety Abney and husband of Sarah Abney, was born May 17, 1923, in Edgefield, South Carolina. On the night of Thursday, February 12, 2015 he answered God’s call and joined his son and daughter in the company of the Lord.
General Abney or “Gin” as his dear wife and close family called him join the United States Army in 1943 and became a Carpenter General, while serving locally and abroad. He served in the campaign of New Guinea Luzon and received Philippines Liberation citation, a APT Service Medal, and a WW#2 Victory Medal. General Abney was honorably discharged in 1945. Upon returning home from the Military he was employed as a painter.
General Abney was united in marriage to Sarah Abney. Two children were born as a result of this union Wesley Abney and Deborah Abney. He went on to open his own business “Abney Signs” in Manhattan, NY; where he hand crafted truck lettering, store signs and custom murals for his clientele. He was later joined in this business by his son Wesley were they worked together, as a father and son team painting signs.
Both he and his wife; were faithful and devoted member of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church of Hollis. General served as a Deacon and was a pillar of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church and the Hollis community that he called home for over 50 years.
General was the last surviving sibling of the nine children of General and Tweety Abney. He was predeceased by both his daughter Deborah Abney and son Wesley Abney.
Deacon General W. Abney Jr. leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved wife Sarah Abney of Queens, NY; his daughter in law Jacqueline Fowler-Abney of Brooklyn, NY; his grandson Jason Wesley Abney of Great Mills, MD; his great granddaughter Touraya D. Abney; his great grandson Jason Wesley Abney Jr; and a host of nephews, nieces, family and friends.
