Obituary for Joseph N. France

Joseph N. France
Joseph France, the son of Joseph Constance France and Evelyn Tyson France, was born on September 3, 1918 in New York City. One of seven siblings, Irving (Teddy), George, Alfred, (Arthur) Lloyd, Beryl and Kenneth, he was educated in the New York City public school system.

When we think about Joe France these words come to mind: world traveler (Merchant Marines), a fine dresser and man-about-time with lots of stories to tell. He was a lover of music, particularly jazz, gifted singer, sculptor who has even had a piece of his work bought by a Japanese art collector. An avid reader, he was a scrupulous keeper of the France family history and culture.

Joe was declared legally blind when he was in his sixties, which led him to retire from his job at Bronx Community College. In retirement he established a relationship with the Lighthouse, an organization devoted to helping the blind learn skills needed to maintain their independence. Until a few years ago he traveled into Manhattan by bus and subway to attend classes, seminars and exercise workouts.

Joe was a founding member of The France Family Circle. He memorized a phenomenal amount of telephone numbers which allowed him to keep in touch with most of us and attend many family celebrations.

Joey married Edith Fleming on February 14, 1965 and made a family with her son Dennis Ferris. Uncle Joe and Aunt Edie traveled the world in style until her death in January, 2005, one moth shy of their 40th wedding anniversary. After Aunt Edie died, Uncle Joe maintained his independence including cooking for himself, which scared the family ~ and his neighbors! Joe France marched to his own beat and lived on his own terms.

Joseph France leaves a host of relatives and friends. Thank you all for celebrating his long, loving and illustrious life. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Evelyn France, step-mother Eliza France, brothers Alfred, Teddy, Lloyd, sister, Beryl France and nephew, Roman France, Sr.
