Obituary for Irene Vines

Irene Janet Norris Vines known affectionately as Nanny, was introduced into the world on July 28th, 1937 in London, England. She was the fifth child to the late Ernest and Hilda Norris. Irene married Melvin Vines Sr., a military man who swept her off her feet. Together they traveled all over Europe. Their final destination was Queens, NY in which they took care of all seven children. The family continued to grow throughout the years. The seven children led to 13 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.

Irene was known as a loving and caring English woman who opened her heart and home to those who needed to be loved, or helped. Everyone who lived in the neighborhood knew her as “Nanny”. All of the children parties were held at the big white house on 223rd Street. These parties were from birthdays to holidays to summer fun. Everyone was at Nanny’s house! Irene happily had a career as a caregiver. She took care of people of all ages and mental capabilities. Those she cared for continued to stay connected to her. Irene knew care giving was a special calling God has given to her. She was a firm believer in God. Irene would encourage others to be a believer in God. Nanny would proudly admit she had Diabetes for over 50 years and God kept her because He loved her. Her testimony would encourage others with long term health issues like her.

Nanny’s hobbies were knitting, reading books, and feeding stray animals. When she wasn’t doing other activities she would make a cup of tea with a slice of buttered bread or tea biscuits and watching English films like Mr. Beans. Every morning was an exciting morning because talked to her sister Pam in England. She was very close to Pam and enjoyed their delightful conversations about the success of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Nanny’s pride and joy was babies and children. She would hum a baby to sleep and push them in an old fashioned navy blue and silver pram with big wheels. Her delightful English voice always soothed the babies within seconds. Nanny thought children should have fun and enjoy their childhood. She thought happy children will grow up to be happy adults. On June 10th, 2015, God said her work on Earth was finished. He called her home to join her deceased family members. Irene currently is with all three of her daughters (Miranda, Catherine, and Sheila) who awaited for her at the gates of Heaven with Jesus.

Irene is survived by her delightful sister Pam. Her siblings Ernest, James, and Hilda is in heaven awaiting for their baby sister Irene. The spirit of a loving mum will remain in her surviving children Ellen (and Lawrence), Susan, Melvin Jr., Danielle, and a host of foster children. Nanny leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Ronnie, Trina, Bernard, Danielle, Damione, Anthony, Yaisa, Ashley, Tamara, Eddie, Matthew, Miranda, Ernest, their wives or husbands. All 24 great grandchildren will cherish the memories of Nanny’s love along with a host of nieces, nephews, Godchildren, in laws and her best bosom buddy Yvonne.

Her loving memories will be cherished by all of those who loved her so much. Mummie/Nanny/Auntie Irene/Ms. Irene we love you very much. Rest in peace and we shall reunite again when our assignment is done.
