Bubbens was born April 20, 1932 to Samuel and Lottie Harrison in South Boston Virginia. The apple of her father’s eye, she had many happy memories of time spent with him until his untimely death, just weeks before her fifth birthday.
Following the death of her father, Bubbens proved early to be responsible, helping her mother with cooking, cleaning and shopping. During rationing years, Bubbens would find out what items were available and would quickly go tell her mother, so they could purchase needed items. A devoted daughter she was ever faithful to her mother until Lottie’s death in 2007.
Bubbens moved to New York along with her cousin Paige during the 1950s. There she met and married Arthur Sockwell, a native of Jamaica, New York, where she made her home until her death.
In spite of many years of illness, Bubbens was very active. Spent countless hours in her garden, she loved both her flowers and vegetables. She could often be found in the back yard with one or more of the many pets we had over the years.
During a season of improved health, Bubbens was able return to work. She held several part time positions for such organizations as the United Cerebral Palsy of Greater New York, New York City Board of Elections, New York City Personnel Services and the Jamaica Farmer’s Market. It was also during this period that she was able to take and pass the high school equivalency exam in just one sitting.
As a long time resident of Jamaica, she will be missed by many friends and neighbors who could count on her warm smile, friendly wave and gentle laugh. She leaves to mourn her husband Arthur, five children, Gregory, Eddie (Darlene), Edye (Larry), Lisa (Felix) of Queens, New York and Janet (Anthony) of Sacramento, California, 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.
