Obituary for James Rich

James Rich
Beloved James Walter Rich was one of nine children born on October 18, 1936 to the late Deacon Walter and Louise Hendley Rich in Statesboro Georgia. At an early age James better known as JW to his friends and family joined the Harmony Baptist Church. He also attended the Bulloch County School in Statesboro, GA.

James later migrated to New York where he worked for Pan American Airlines and the NYC Board of Education as a janitorial porter. As James made his way in life, he fell in love and married Selma Omeir in February 1975. Their union grew with the birth of three children: Lilja Rich, Mary Rich and Jermaine Rich. As he retired, James found hobbies of watching old western movies and listening to music such as the Blues and Gospel to pass his time. What he always enjoyed most was his dream to hit lotto big.

James was a devoted father, husband, brother, grandfather, uncle and a friend. He was a kind soft-spoken man who rarely got upset. He love to talk about the “good old days” with his kids. Somehow someway there was always a lesson to be learned at the end of his stories. He was the type of man who always was there whenever you needed him. James will be best remembered for his wit and his generosity, as well as his ultimate goal to hit the Lotto. It’s so funny because whenever someone told him about a dream he would run to the lotto dream book to see what numbers was associated with the dream and then play it.

James was part of a big family. He was preceded in death by his father Deacon James Walter Rich, his mother Louise Hendley Rich, his two (2) sisters Etta Mae Rich Parrish, Sadie Mae Rich as well as one (1) brother Deacon Hubert Franklin Rich. He’s survived by four (4) sisters Mary Lou Rich Underwood (Englewood, Oh) Leomie Rich (Statesboro, GA), Armetta Rich (Statesboro, GA), Ruth Rich (Statesboro, GA) and Robert Rich (Statesboro, GA); several nieces and nephews, brother & sister-in-laws and cousins.

James was called home to rest on August 4, 2015 in his home with his family. He leaves to mourn his devoted and loving wife Selma Omeir Rich, loving daughters Lilja Louise Rich and Mary Yadira Rich and loving son Jermaine Walter Rich. His beloved grandchildren: Radaie Morse, Denym Hills, Omar Dylan Hills and Jaylah Rich. While James will be missed he will never be forgotten and lives on in a host of family and close friends as well as anyone’s life he touched.

James requested to be cremated. His ashes will be kept in the home with his family.
