Obituary for Luther L. Mervin Jr.

Luther L.  Mervin Jr.
Luther Mervin Jr. was born to the union of the late Luther Mervin Sr. (Poppa Charlie) and Earthalee Mervin on November 12, 1940. Luther was preceded in death by his son Kenneth and daughter Victoria Jones.

Luther was commonly called “Spike” by family and associates, was born in Ridgeland, South Carolina. He attended and graduated from the school system in Jasper County, Ridgeland SC.

A decorated and dedicated military man, Spike joined the United States Air force shortly after graduating from High School in 1958. After receiving an honorable discharge he migrated to New York City in 1962. Spike was employed by the United State Post Office for a brief period which he eventually moved on to work for MTA which he later retired.

A man with an easy going spirit and a caring heart, he enjoyed music, dancing and ice cream on a Sunday afternoon which was a favorite past-time of his.

It was in New York that he met and married his late wife Loretta M. Mervin during the course of this union a son Lorenzo L. Mervin was born. Spike was cared for and loved by his devoted aunts Inell Mervin and the late Lucille Hill during his long battle of illness. He departed peacefully on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 in the comfort of his own home and bed which was his final wishes.

Luther Mervin Jr. leaves to mourn and cherish his memory: Sons, Lorenzo and Keith; Brother, Perry (Aristina) Mervin; Sister, Ethel (Richard) Rivers; 2 Aunts Inell Mervin and Priscilla Reed; Spike had a host of grandchildren including, Lorenzo Jr., Breanna, Dominic, Lorenzo Darrius, Octavius, and Maxwell; 3 great grandchildren, Zyon, Zaniya and Laila.

Spike also leaves behind 3 nieces which one preceded him in death (Zelma Mervin), Cheryl Battle and Parris Morris; 3 lifelong friends which 1 preceded him in death (Nye), Frances and Diamond. A host of cousins.
