Ivan Laniere Jones was born the younger of two children to Rosetta Jones on March 15, 1981. Born and raised in Jamaica, NY, he attended local public schools throughout his youth, including Andrew Jackson High School.
During his adult years, he flourished in the retail industry, excelling at management and customer service. As a result of his strong work ethic, dedication, and attentiveness to customers, he succeeded and advanced throughout his career. Despite having a challenging work schedule, he also found time to coach in a youth basketball league.
Ivan was a kind, generous, talented, strong, and hardworking young man that remained positive in the face of adversity. His optimistic outlook and joyful energy was infectious. He made friends easily with people of all ages and backgrounds, for to know Ivan was to love him. His lightheartedness and constant smile made children gravitate towards him. He expressed his love without condition or restraint. His passions included basketball, reading and traveling.
In 2015, his friendship with Brandy Hurlbert blossomed into a loving relationship, as the couple shared a home and a life together in Harlem, NY. Despite being diagnosed with brain cancer and enduring surgeries and treatments, Ivan continued to relish life with his soul mate through travel, weekend excursions, and time with friends and family. Brandy ensured that his last moments were happy ones, dedicating herself to the health of his emotional and physical well-being.
After a 1.5 year long, courageous battle with brain cancer, Ivan passed away peacefully on June 4, 2016 at the VNSNY Hospice Unit in Bellevue Hospital- Manhattan, NY.
He will be remembered by his loving mother, Rosetta Jones; love of his life, Brandy Hurlbert; sister, Tahisha (Keith) Anderson; nieces, Sharele and Sabrina Anderson; nephew, Keith Anderson, Jr.; aunts, Orlena Jones and Sonjia (Kevin) Smith; 1st cousins, April Jones, Michellene (Latoya) Perkins, Tammie Moore, Javonne Carl, Sarina (Darren) Artis, John (Janna) Jones, Nakia (Sean) Mangroo, Kevin (Terria) Smith, Jr., Nefertiti Jones, and Solomon Jones, as well as a host of 2nd and 3rd cousins and friends.
