After an extraordinary one-hundred years of bringing joy to everyone around him, our beloved Jesse joined the Lord on Saturday, August 6th, 2016 at his home in Queens. He was at peace and surrounded by his family. As a result, our hearts are a little less bright today, but we rest assured that Heaven is that much brighter.
Jesse William Carr was born in Houston, Texas on June 18, 1916, to Ethel Catherine Carr and Charles Carr, one of four siblings - Margeret, Ethel, and Kermitt. He graduated from Jack Yates high school before attending Prayerview College for four years and receiving a bachelors degree. In 1941, by way of the draft, he was called to give his service to his fellow Americans and his country on the eve of World War II. While serving in the Armed Forces, he quickly rose to the esteemed rank of Warrant Officer. During the war, he worked as a drill instructor, training the men who would fight overseas to save the free world.
Following his service in the military, Jesse traveled across the country working various jobs, including at the Hunts Point Terminal Market in the Bronx, where he was employed for several decades until his retirement at the age of 73. He met his beloved wife, Philomena “Cathy” Carr, in New York and the two married on 1988. He was blessed by the birth of his only child, Tiffany, on May 5, 1989.
Jesse is remembered as a great father, a family man, a patriot, an avid sports fanatic, a humble and devout Christian, as a wonderful neighbor, and as a pillar of every community he was ever a part of. Jesse's legacy will be cherished by his wife of 28 years, Philomena Carr; by his daughter, Tiffany Carr; by his step daughters Michelle and Youlanda Blondell; by his four grandchildren, Alex, Brian, Aaron and Adil; by his niece, Ethel Delores, and his nephew, Herman Jenkins; and by a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
