Our beloved Herma Monica Cunningham's life is best remembered as a legacy of love through
service.
She was born to Alexander and Laura Evans [both deceased] in Frankfield, Clarendon in Jamaica, West Indies. In search of a better life, Herma immigrated to England and became a nurse's assistant. When granted an opportunity to move to the United States she seized it, settling in New York and later marrying. She would later serve as a nursing assistant at the Holly Patterson Nursing Home in Uniondale, New York for many years.
Herma delighted in cooking huge meals for family holiday gatherings as well as for large groups in her church and honestly, for anyone who made a request. She was famously known for her Caribbean cooking: jerk turkeys, black and carrot cakes, sorrel and pepper sauce, to name a few. Often the sole cook for these functions, Herma seemed to relish the challenge and worked tirelessly to create her culinary delights. Few knew that as she fed the body, she was also ministering to the soul as a faithful prayer warrior and intercessor.
She was also a steward of the earth, ministering to the world with her green thumb. She loved gardening. Her home was known for its lush foliage and vegetable gardens. Many were blessed with her harvest of peppers, callaloo, tomatoes and herbs. Not content to keep this gift to herself, she enjoyed helping neighbors and friends plant their own gardens all over Long Island.
Herma was predeceased by her son Kelvin Wright and her sibling Joyce Evans. She leaves behind to cherish her memory three children (Gary Evans, Donovan Cunningham, Jr. and Elizabeth Cunningham) along with four siblings (Calvin Evans, Lenburn Evans, Madge Young, Shirley "Charm" Kweli) five grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews as well as a host of family and friends.
