Obituary for Yolanda Maria "Wita Andy" Garrido

Yolanda Maria "Wita Andy" Garrido
Yolanda Garrido, 82, of Brooklyn New York, went to rest with the lord on March 13, 2017 at Brookdale Hospital in Brownsville. Born on September 6, 1934, in Cartagena Colombia. She completed her studies in Colombia, at the Colegio Octaviana del C. Vives C. then briefly took a chance to sing on a radio station in Colombia before coming to New York at the age of 25 to marry the love of her life, Rogelio Gonzalvez (2009). She is predeceased by her mother Maria Elguedo, her father Rufo Garrido, her stepfather Horracio Caballero, her brothers Victor and Cristobal Garrido, and her two step sons Frank and Roy Gonzalvez. Over the years she was a proud owner of a Toy store, a Grocery store and a Mini Market in Brooklyn. She also owned a few residential properties in Brooklyn. In her later years, she worked for BHRAGS taking care of the sick and elderly for nineteen years. She retired in 2012.

She had a love for Lotto scratch offs, which she called “rapa rapas”, the NYS Lottery, and “Los Numeros”. She loved taking care of, cooking for, and spending time with her grandchildren. As well as listening to music, and watching Univision and Telemundo including the “oh so famous Sabado Gigante” and her Novelas. Over the years she was a wife, sister, niece, daughter, mother, friend and a grandmother. She taught us how to love and she gave us strength and might. A stronger person would be hard to find, as she was a rare gem. In her own way she fought for each and every one she loved, she gave us her very best and now it has come time for her to rest. So, go in peace, Mami/Abuelita/Wita/Andy you’ve earned your sleep. We love you and in our hearts we will eternally keep you.

She is survived by her three daughters: Yolanda Rosa, Nannette McSwiggan, and Shirley Gonzalvez Samuel, her step daughter Ninon Bello, her five grandchildren: Christina Mendoza, Courtney Rosa, Dominique Smith, Kelsey Rosa, Nadia Samuel and “Baby” Shawn Samuel. She also leaves behind her beloved sons-in-law, Anibal (Joe) Rosa, Shawn Samuel, and Michael McSwiggan. Yolanda also had many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and a sister whom she loved very much.
