Obituary for Claudette Augustine

Claudette Augustine
On behalf of Arminex Carbon and Claudia Augustine, the son and daughter of Claudette Augustine, and the rest of the Augustine family, I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for joining us in celebrating the life of Claudette Augustine.

Claudette Augustine was born in the beautiful village of Glanvillia, Dominica, on April 18, 1955 to parents Deltoise Augustine and Catherine Magloire. She graduated from Saint John High School. She was also one of the first females from Dominica to be sent to Cuba to further her studies. She became a vibrant, active figure in her community. She was one of the best rounders’ players during her time in Dominica. Her height, stature and strength brought fear to opposing teams. She had a very close relationship with the ruling political party. During her time in Dominica she was a head figure during election times. She would campaign for her party while encouraging everyone to come out and vote. She became known as “The Boss Lady” during election times.

Claudette’s compassion and caring nature skyrocketed to another level after the catastrophic natural disaster of hurricane David which took place in 1979. She led the efforts of supply distribution for those in need. She ensured that everyone received food, shelter and clothing that they needed. She also demonstrated her courage and toughness during the hurricane. Under life threatening heavy rain and wind, she sacrificed her life when she ran into a falling house to rescue her niece, Angie, who is here with us today. Claudette was as tough as they come. She was afraid of nothing.

Claudette immigrated to the United States of America in 1979. There she worked very hard to provide a better life for herself and family. Shortly thereafter, she was able to file for her daughter and then her son. Her heart was complete when they both joined her. She worked for Home Health Management Services, Inc. for over twenty years. In 2009, she received an award for employee of the year.

Claudette was clearly the head of the family. She was the nucleus that kept the family together. She would prepare breakfast and dinner every Sunday in order to bring the entire family together. Though her daughter and her son were the loves of her life, she cared deeply for all family members. She was the protector of the family. Here are a couple events where she demonstrated her protectiveness:
• Her sister was once locked out of her home by the sheriff. Claudette, without hesitation, broke the lock and allowed her sister to get her belongings.
• While one of her sisters was at a dance, Claudette came in and saw that she was dancing with a man.

Claudette pushed the man away. She then continued to slap her sister over the head and instructed her to go home. Keep in mind that her sister was 18 years of age at the time.

Claudette lived her life by the quote “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” She was deeply religious. Her favorite prayer was “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. Claudette cared deeply for everyone she knew, whether you were her family member, friend or coworker. She was always willing to help out someone in need and had a very kind heart. She had numerous friends. Her house was often filled with friends and family. She loved to entertain. She always had a fish broth on the fire and drinks on hand for whenever people stopped by. Everyone whom had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with Claudette loved her. One of her favorite party quotes was “Look Good Time.”
When Claudette was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the gallbladder it was a very difficult time. She was such a positive and strong lady that she never acted down. Even during these tough times she continued encouraging her son, daughter and other family members to cheer up and remain positive. This disease never broke her spirit. Her last words to her son and her daughter before she passed were ‘What are you two crying for? Don’t you all know that I’ve already made my peace with God?”

Claudette will be missed dearly. To us she was the best mother, godmother, sister, aunty, and friend in the world. Even though she is gone, her memory will live on in our hearts forever. God bless you Claudette. You will be forever missed.
