Obituary for Carmen Weeks

Carmen Weeks
Carmen M. Weeks was born Carmen Mae Inniss in Harlem, USA on December 14, 1926. She was the oldest of two children by Edgar Inniss and Myra Riley, immigrants from the Caribbean nation of Barbados. A graduate of George Washington High School (Class of ’44), Carmen married Aubrey J. Weeks in 1948, who predeceased her in 1975. In 1953, Carmen, Aubrey and their two children, Audrey and Aubrey Jr. moved into their home in Jamaica, Queens. A devoted mother and wife, Carmen was also active in her local community as a member of the Baisely Park Community League, the local Democratic club and The Vulcanettes (wives of Black Firemen), and as a Sunday School teacher and Girl Scout troop leader.
In 1968 Carmen returned to school to begin her college education as a part-time student while working full-time as an educational assistant. She received her Bachelors from York College in 1975 and Masters in Education from St. John’s University in 1981. She continued to teach in the NYC Public schools where she enriched the lives of hundreds of students until she retired in 1991.
Carmen was well known for her wit and elegance. She was an independent spirit and world traveler—she visited every continent except for Antarctica. She had an active social life, loved to entertain and was an avid scrabble player. A matriarch, in every sense of the word, Carmen was unwavering in her support of her family. She was caregiver to both her elderly Parents and younger brother Bernard, who suffered from PTSD, tending to their needs until their final days. Also notable, was the way she made sure her granddaughters were well educated and able to travel the world. Carmen was also very charitable person and recipients of her good work included Muslim organizations.
