Obituary for Sharon Elizabeth Atkinson

Ms. Sharon Atkinson was born to Mrs. Claretha Atkinson in Harlem, New York on August 19, 1955. Sharon was the second daughter of three children. As a young child she was a faithful follower of Christ. She was member of Bethany Baptist Church. Sharon had a passion for music and under the leadership of the late Bishop J. Warren Hicks she joined the Young People’s Choir. She served faithfully for several years.

Sharon attended PS 160 elementary school and Russell Sage Junior High School. In 1973 Sharon graduated from John Bowne High School in Queens. During her high school years Sharon worked as a Crew Chief for the Summer Youth Program.

After graduating from high school, Sharon attended City University at Hunter College where she began her studies in Elementary Education. She had the opportunity through the Hunter College Training Tomorrow’s Teachers program to student teach at PS 103 in East Harlem. While attending College she worked at Alexander’s Department Store.

In 1976, Sharon began her work with children at Western Queens Nursery School. In 1999 Sharon met her soul mate and life partner Mr. Steven Kearney. They made a home together in East Islip, Long Island. Sharon continued her work in the day care system until her health began to fail.

After a long battle with illness God saw fit to call Sharon from labor to reward on November 20, 2017.

Her sister Doretha Haskin preceded Sharon in death.

Sharon leaves to cherish her memory: a loving mother Claretha Atkinson, a brother Bruce Atkinson, a stepbrother William Atkinson (Randy), her life partner Stephen Kearney, three nephews Shawn Haskin Sr., Tony Christian Fleming, and Christopher Atkinson (J.R.), one niece Tonya Christina Fleming who called Aunt Sharon her favorite, one great-nephew Shawn Haskin Jr., one aunt Betty Robertson, long time friend of forty years Cynthia Wright, and a host of relatives and friends.

Sharon we love you, but God loves you best.
