Obituary for George A. Samuels

George A. Samuels
On Tuesday, June 19, 2018, the Samuels-Davis family lost a devoted husband, father and brother. In all respects, he was an exquisite person— thoroughly committed to family, a dedicated and conscientious worker and sincere in his friendships—during his entire lifetime. Preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Edna, he leaves to mourn his passing: two sons, George Paul and Brian; three grandchildren—Markus, Layna, and George; a sister, Jean; daughters-in-law: Tracey and Michelle; nieces Dolores and Tasha; nephews Ralph Sr. and Ralph Jr; the Gumbs and Sinclair families and, numerous friends and others in the community who looked up to him and will cherish his memory.

George A. was born in New York to Cynthia Daphne and George Samuels on April 16, 1937. He grew up in Harlem, in the area known as "The Valley". He attended the New York City Public School System, graduating from Samuel Gompers High School located in the Bronx, NY. Within a year of graduation he enlisted in the United States Army to become a paratrooper and earned his wings. He received a discharge in good standing in 1958; and in that year would meet his life partner, Edna. Shortly after their marriage in 1960, he began working as a bus operator for NYC Transit. In 1965, he joined the NY Police Department's Transit Division. Subsequently, the Transit Division merged into the NYPD, from which he retired as a detective in 1996.

George was affectionately known as “Sam” or “GAS” to some of his working buddies and at the community hangout. His passions were painting, sports, doo-wop, and a “lot” of traveling. There were family vacations to Canada, Disney World, Washington D.C., and to numerous basketball and baseball events while the sons were growing up. In their later years, he and Edna had their annual Christmas-New Year cruises and the Atlantic City and Las Vegas trips to the “slots”. Although he did not actively participate in any sport, he coached the a Little League team one year and was an avid follower of several of major league professional teams. What he did most and best was to provide for and protect the family.

The Samuels-Davis family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all who took the time to send expressions of sympathy and condolences. Your kindness and generosity is very much appreciated and will be remembered.
