Annie Mae  Sims
Annie Mae Sims was born on September 22, 1933 to the late Bunion and Annie Turner in Edgefield, South Carolina. Annie’s father Bunion Turner died shortly before she was born. Annie was raised by her mother Annie and Willie Jones the only father she knew. Annie was raised in Aiken County, South Carolina until age 6. Annie was a member of Shaws Creek Baptist Church in Edgefield, South Carolina. Annie and her family relocated to Queens, New York. Annie was affectionately called “Dolly” by her only beloved sister and best friend, Bertha. Annie and her family were active members at Carter Baptist Church, Queens, New York. Dolly served as an Usher for many years. Dolly was educated in the NYC Public School System. She attended Public School 40, Queens, New York and later graduated from Mable Dean Bacon Vocational High School, Manhattan, New York as a Culinary Specialist.
In 1953, Dolly married Clifford Vincent Smith, Sr. They resided in Queens, New York. Out of this union, 4 children were born: Nannetta, Vannessa, Clifford, Jr. (Barbara), and Dorothy (Theodore, Sr.). She later married Hollie Ben Sims, a retired US Navy seaman. She remained in this union until his death in 1983.
Dolly worked for twenty years as a Home Health Care Specialist. She was hired as a private duty Nurse’s Aide. After completing her private duty assignment, she accepted a position as a Dietary Assistant at Amistad Day Care Center. Dolly was an aspiring Culinary Specialist. She enjoyed working in the kitchen. Cooking was her passion and she was exceptional in this role. After several years, Dolly retired and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Dolly also enjoyed listening to Motown Sounds, dancing, crocheting, knitting and playing card games. She was a skilled card player at Pitty Pat and Poker.
Dolly was an exceptional woman. She was extremely funny, kind, independent, strong, and protective of her friends and loved ones. Most of all, she loved her children and was proud of their many accomplishments. She valued education and made many sacrifices for her children to attend Catholic School and college. She persevered throughout her lifetime. She made many sacrifices in order for her children to attend parochial school.
Dolly is survived by her 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
