Obituary for Cora A Johnson

Cora Johnson was born to the late Kizzie and Willie Brennan on October 27, 1929 in Columbia, South Carolina. She is the last of their children to join them in heaven. Cora attended public schools in South Carolina, until her family moved to New York where she completed her formal early education. Upon graduation from high school, her accounting abilities secured her the position as head bookkeeper for Keystone Electronics. This was a tremendous feat for an African American in the early fifties.

Cora met and married the late Charlie Johnson. Together until his death, they raised five children. Cora was able to get through those trying times by leaning on the Lord, the prayers of her family and the support from her pastor and the Bethany Baptist Church members. Alone and raising three young children, Cora decided to return to school to pursue her lifelong dream of teaching persons with special needs. Her dream became a reality as she taught at The Howard Beach Developmental Center. Cora instilled in her children the drive and tenacity for a solid education and always to work hard for what they wanted, always remembering to put God first.

Cora became a member of Bethany Baptist Church on January 1, 1967 under the then pastor Rev. Dr. W. Leo Hamilton. Over the next two decades Cora’s passion to help others would continue to grow as she worked diligently and effortlessly as the Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-Prescient and President of the Senior Usher Board of Bethany Baptist Church and Treasurer of the South Carolina Ministry. Cora’s love for learning and her desire to continue teaching compelled her to become a Sunday School teacher as well as a teacher for Vacation Bible School. After her retirement she worked with several senior citizen groups, Bethany’s soup kitchen and the food pantry. She also served as the Financial Secretary, Treasurer and Matron of Martha Chapter #79 Eastern Star OES. In addition to everything else she accomplished along the way she was a member of the Growth in Christ Community Choir.
Cora was blessed with many talents and she was willing to share her gifts with others. Her friendship cakes melted in your mouth. She loved beauty as is evident by the mini Botanical Garden she created outside and inside her home.

Cora was loved by her family, Bethany Baptist Church, Eastern Star and the Eastern Baptist Association. Cora was the Epitome of Proverbs 31:10. But most importantly she is loved by God and He is proud to call her His child. On October 4, 2018 God called her home to receive her crown; she is now resting in the arms of Jesus.

Cora leaves to cherish her memory and great legacy, her children; Rev. Charles (Susie) Johnson, Barbara (Curtis) Robinson Sr., Cheryl Johnson and Charlene Johnson. Her son Carl Johnson preceded her in death. Grandchildren; Her granddaughter Tanya Robinson also preceded her in death, Curtis Robinson Jr., Dominique, Chanelle and Zahmar Woodside. Great-grandchildren; Dominique (Arthur) Carter, Senchell Robinson, Gabriella Johnson and Dorothy-Ann Greer. Great-great-grandchildren; Aiden and Radiant Carter. Sisters-in-law; Carrie Powell and Mary Johnson and a host of loving family and friends.
