Obituary for Richard W. Dunbar

Richard W. Dunbar
Richard W. Dunbar (a.k.a. “Jack”), son of Horace and Millie Dunbar; born on November 6, 1932 in Perquimans County, North Carolina departed this life on April 3, 2018. His beloved wife, Gloria Dunbar preceded him in death on April 16, 1999. Together, in their union of over 47 years; he and Gloria bore two children; Dorothy Dunbar and Richard Dunbar.
Jack as he was so often called; loved his family and he loved life. His primary love was his God and Community Baptist Church, where he has been a long time member for many years. His favorite saying was “trust God with your whole heart,” and his favorite songs were “Jesus Be a Fence Around Me” and “Cool Water.” His secondary love was his family. As Jack aged, his health slowly became impaired. His granddaughter, Danielle Dunbar was a sense of pride and joy and a source of help; who took on the responsibility of becoming his caregiver and was devoted unto him up until his death. His third love was evident in the quality of his work as a Landscaper. From doing his client’s lawn, to Community Baptist Church lawn to the block he shared with his neighbors on Arlington Terrace, it was always done with pride. Jack was also known as Mr. Fixer. As Mr. Fixer, he broke things and then he fixed them up! And lastly, he loved caring for his great granddaughters, twins Taylor and Tori Dunbar. They made him laugh! They filled his home with life!
He leaves to mourn and cherish his legacy: His daughter, Dorothy Dunbar and his son, Richard Dunbar. He leaves six (6) siblings; two (2) brothers Carson Dunbar and Clyde Dunbar of Queens Village, NY and four (4) sisters Cora Lee Skinner of Bronx, NY; Lucille Mallory of Elizabeth City, NC, Margaret Hubert of Hastings, FL and Millie Annette Dunbar of Bronx, NY. He leaves eight (8) grandchildren, Richard Green, Ronnie Green, Lakeisha Ellis, Tashanesha Hargrove, Danielle Dunbar, Tony Hargrove, Darnell Dunbar and Zahmire Dunbar. He leaves thirteen (13) great grandchildren and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, church family and friends.
A “special daughter in every sense of the word,” and recognized as the same, is Yvonne (Maria) Hutcherson, her daughter Amanda Parson, her son Anthony Cobbs and her husband, Oral and between Oral and Jack, they were known as the fixer uppers.
Lovingly submitted,
