Obituary for Bishop Walter James Walker Sr.

Bishop Walter James Walker Sr.
Bishop Walter James Walker was born on May 3, 1935, in Middletown Ohio to the late Ophelia and Horace Walker; he was their only child.

At some point (history unknown);Ophelia and Horace moved to New York City and resided in the borough of Queens. As he grew, Young Walter matriculated through the New York Public School system and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School.

As a young man he was skillful with his hands, aside from boxing which he enjoyed; he would always be found tinkering with something mechanical or electrical; it was one of his natural gifts. Young Walter became involved with the church as he would go with his mother and he developed a love for it. He was drawn to music as the choir would sing and you could hear him from time to time humming or singing some of his favorite tunes such as; “Pass Me Not O’ Gentle Savior”; or “He’s Sweet I Know”; or “I’ve Got Jesus And That’s Enough”. Music was an important part of his walk with Christ.

In the winter of 1951, Walters’ life change forever, he met Carrie Mae Harrison as Chance would have it at one of his relatives home in Queens. Carrie had just move to New York from Columbia S.C. When Walter saw her he was smitten; and the pursuit was on! He made every effort to see “his” Carrie! They would spend time talking and talking, until he got up enough nerve to ask her for a date. Their first date was of all places a Tent Revival. Now what made this humorous was that Carrie was brought up Baptist, she was a Member of the Macedonian Baptist Church; And was not interested in any Pentecostal Tent Revival, but she gave in and went to the service; She loved the music. She eventually accepted Christ as Savior and was Baptized in Jesus Name.

In September of 1952 Walter accepted his call to ministry and gave his “Trial Sermon” he preached from the text. 2 Timothy 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

After a courtship period, Min.Walter Walker proposed to Carrie Mae Harrison; she accepted; and on April 5 1953 they were married at Emmanuel Temple (P.A.W). Carrie loved her mother in law Ophelia, who said to her ...”I don’t want a daughter in law, I want a daughter”.

As Walter and Carrie moved on in life, and in mid 1950’s thru 1960 they started their family, to which four children were born, Jacqueline, Barbara, Walter Jr., and Rose. After living at two homes they eventually purchased their home in Hollis Queens and reared their children.
In 1966-1968 Elder Walker, was voted in as the National Young People’s President of the Pentecostal Assemblies Of The World, to which he led thousands of young people in ministry and service.

On September 3rd 1972 Bishop’s Walker was installed as Sr. Pastor of the Morning Star Pentecostal Chapel in New York City, N.Y., he pastored there for eleven years. He was elevated to the office of District Elder, and then move on to Corona Queens where he Founded the Emmanuel Temple Church (P.A.W). He Pastored Emmanuel Temple for seven years.

On February 28, 2003 District Elder Walter James Walker was elevated to the office of Suffragan Bishop, By the New York State & Canada council. Officiated by the Bishop Charles E. Davis. Diocesan.

Bishop Walker was never one to let grass grow under his feet, he was bi-vocational throughout his life, for he was entrepreneurial he always had an affinity toward security and Law enforcement, he was an auxiliary Policemen with NYPD, and then later a Sargent with IBPI Security, and later on he started Walker Security, where he gained notable clientele such as, National Urban League, Martin Paints, Boyd Chemist, Smart Size Stores along with other clients. He was also involved with various community outreach programs in the southeast Queens area.

Bishop Walker, was a man that loved his family and encouraged their every effort to pursue their goals in life. Bishop had a favorite phrase that was familiar to his family he would say ...”I GOT THAT RIGHT”!

On Sunday August 5th after succumbing to his illness of six years, Bishop was called home to be with his Lord Jesus as his beloved “Mae” was by his side. She loved him throughout his illness; even till the end, she stayed till his last breathe.

One of Bishop’s favorite verses was found in psalm 23... he would simply say “The Lord Is My Shepherd...”
