Obituary for Mother Elizabeth M. "Nana" Hogan

Elizabeth M. Allen was born December 24, 1939 in Brooklyn New York, to James and Marion Allen. It was on Putman Avenue, where she spent the earlier years of her childhood. Her family later moved to Queens New York, and lived on 109 Pinegrove Street. Elizabeth attended P.S. 160, Shimer Junior High School 142 and Woodrow Wilson High School, which is now, August Martin High School, where she met her sweetheart, James Hogan, who she would later marry after graduation. Out of that union, four children were born: Robin, Robert, Roxanne and Richard; and from the four children, there are close to 70 grandchildren, great-grand and great-great grand.

Elizabeth has always been a very loving, caring, unselfish, intelligent, comedic and witty person, with a heart bigger than life itself. She loved writing and had been given a special gift from God to creatively pen her thoughts, as well as any writing assignment given to her. One in particular, awarded her a special commendation and recognition in the local papers, for winning a citywide essay contest while in high school. Although she lost her mother at the age of 17; she continued to live life to the fullest. A God fearing woman, whose loving tender heart speaks depths deeper and more vast than a bottomless ocean; she had dreams of becoming a writer, but instead efficaciously birthed a nation of them, where her heart, soul and unpenned thoughts, vicariously live.

She was a friend to everyone and without hesitation Elizabeth displayed love careful attention for all who needed a listen ear. Listening was one of her greatest gifts. She was also been blessed with a special insight, which allowed her to only see the good in all people.

She lived in the Baisley Park Houses for almost sixty years and everyone lovingly called her “Nanny”. There is not a soul that she would not help. When times get rough and situations seemed unbearable, her answer was always; “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers them out of them all.” (Psalm 34:19) She was a dedicated and hardworking employee of the New York State Department of Labor for almost 20 years. She was a very active and committed member in her church, Divine Deliverance Ministries, where her son Apostle Richard Hogan is the Pastor. Mother Hogan, as she was called, the church mother, her calling did not permit her to stop at that; she was part of the finance committee, one of the Sunday School teachers, a prayer warrior and even brought forth the word on a few Sundays. Whether it’s work, church, spending time with her sisters, or playing a competitive game of Scrabble with her children, grandchildren and great-grand - - she was going to enjoy herself and those around her.

All that came in contact with her experienced the precious gift of her love and a change in their lives. Her legacy brings to mind the proverb … Strength and honor are her clothing; she openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her. (Proverbs 31). Elizabeth (Liggy-Nanny-Mother) Hogan, was the epitome of a virtuous woman a true humble, loving servant.
