Obituary for McKinley N Hopkins

McKinley Napoleon Hopkins, affectionately known to all as Mac, was born on September 10, 1932, in Roanoke, Virginia to Queen Victoria Rayford of Roanoke, Virginia, and Willie Henry Hopkins from Martinsville, Virginia.

McKinley was inducted into the US Army on April 24, 1951, when he was 18 years old and his most significant service assignment was in the 2nd Battalion, 350th "Battle Mountain" Infantry Regiment stationed in Austria, Germany. This unit had been previously cited for outstanding performance of duty in action by the War Department General Order No.10, 1945. McKinley left the United States Army as a Corporal on April 10, 1954, receiving an honorable discharge at 21 years old. While serving, McKinley was the recipient of three commendations, the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Occupation Medal.

After separating from the US Army, McKinley was a Nursing Assistant for 27 years at the Veteran’s Administration of New York’s Healthcare System located at 423 East 23rd Street, NY, NY, retiring in 1989. Mac received many awards there, most for perfect attendance and exemplary work, and he took great pride in his work! Walking to work most days, McKinley was a long-term New Yorker having lived in the village at 223 West 10th Street, Apt. 2C for 53 years. Known for his giving heart and warm spirit, Mac loved watching his sports and enjoyed playing spades and bid whist!

McKinley Hopkins died on March 18, 2019, in Bronx, New York, at the Schervier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Mac was predeceased by sister’s Helen, Dorothy, Edwina, and Barbara Jean, and brother’s Arthur,
Levi, and Calvin. McKinley had a devoted, loving first cousin, Ruth Hines whom he affectionately called “baby sis.” Ruth became his caregiver for the last few years of his life.

Mac leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, in addition to special friends Yvonne Pierce, Cindy Izquierdo, and Claudia Murillo.
