Obituary for Dorothy G "Dottie" Owens

We do not understand the mystery of death, but it is the heritage of our great faith that we lay our blessed and deceased away. In this we find our comfort and strength. Human life has its seasons. Childhood and youth are the spring of life. Adulthood is the summer. Declination is the autumn and old age is the winter.

Dorothy Elizabeth Griffin Owens, with characteristic grace and unobtrusiveness, entered into the Fuller Life on Saturday, April 20, 2019.

The daughter of the late Johnnie Griffin and Vivian Feaster Griffin, she was born in Columbia, South Carolina on January 27, 1932.

She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina. Continuing her studies in pursuit of excellence, she later received her Master’s Degree from the Columbia University Teacher’s College in New York City.

Dorothy was united in Holy Matrimony to Harry Alfonso Owens of Far Rockaway, New York on December 22, 1956. The couple relocated to Jamaica, New York. Their marriage was the beginning of 62 years of love and devotion to their union and ultimately to their family. To their union, three children were born. Their only son, Ronald Everett Owens passed on into eternal life on May 30, 1997.

After settling in New York, one of her first positions was as a stenographer for the Louis Harris Polling Agency in the Empire State Building. Her passion was Education to which she dedicated her entire career. While still living in South Carolina, she taught classes at Allen University as well as in the Orangeburg and Greenwood County Public Schools. She devoted the remaining years of her career teaching Business Education in Yonkers Public Schools, Roosevelt Public Schools and Hempstead Public Schools on Long Island. After a long and accomplished teaching career, she retired in 1991.

Dorothy lived a full, Christian life. She was baptized into the Methodist Faith at Emmanuel A.M.E. Church in Columbia, South Carolina. She was a member of Rush Temple A. M. E. Zion Church in Jamaica, Queens, and Williams Chapel A. M. E. Church in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She also attended services at Riverside Church, NY, New York, Grace Lutheran Church in Malverne, New York, Bethel A.M.E. Church in Freeport, New York and Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

To know her was to love her. She was not only a devoted wife, mother and sister, she was also kind and loving to her nieces and nephews as well as other members of her family. Her life was exemplary, an example for others to follow.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories, her devoted husband, Mr. Harry A. Owens, two loving daughters, Ms. Vanessa M. Owens, Ms. Audrey V. Owens; her grandson, Master Joshua R. Owens; her brother, Mr. James A. Griffin; her sister, Mrs. Jean G. (Lewis) Robinson; sisters-in-law, Ms. Irene B. Owens, Mrs. Mattie O. Amaker; brother-in-law, Mr. Charles (Barbara) Owens; six nieces, Ms. Evelyn J. Jackson , Ms. Jacqueline Owens, Mrs. Mamie J. (Brad) Ryant , Ms. Mae Bowden, Ms. Alicia E. Amaker, Ms. Alana J. Owens, Mr. David (Christine) Owens, Mr. Thomas (Sharon) Owens, Mr. Derrick (Grishelda) Owens, Mr. Arthur C.O. (Shuntay) Amaker and a host of other loving family members and dear friends.

She left behind a lovely past. Great and noble was her life. She withstood the sting of the strife. Her deeds were motivated by love. We know she is resting with her God. She will always be remembered.
