Obituary for Sainte Helene Louigene

On Sunday, June 2, 2019, at 5:35 am at Hillside Manor Rehabilitative and Extended Care Facility, Marie Sainte Helene Henry Louigene, loving mother, grandmother, and friend, was called home at the age 96.
Sainte Helene was born on March 4, 1923, in Petit -Goâve, Haiti to Saint Norrier Henry and Cinélia Vernet, which preceded her in death. Sainte Helene was the eldest of five siblings. Later on, she married Jean Esperance Louigene on March 17, 1951 and they had six children together. They raised Helene Louigene, Remy Louigene, Marie Roseline Louigene Magny, Rene Louigene, Anne Philomene Louigene, Michaelle E. Louigene Sanon (from eldest to youngest order).
In 1984, Sainte Helene relocated to Miami, Florida for a piece of the American dream. In April 2000, she became a U.S. citizen, which was one of her greatest accomplishments achieved at the age of 77. Becoming a citizen was a task Sainte Helene took on with great pride and was studious. Sainte Helene studied every day, had her grandchildren quiz her, and made little study rhymes with her grandchildren’s names to assist with the memorization. Obtaining her U.S. citizenship was an imperative goal because she had a strong desire to provide the rest of her children that were still in Haiti a better opportunity in America. She did all of this with a limited English language background.
Over the years, Sainte Helene had many residences ranging from New York to Connecticut. Wherever her children were building their lives she ensured to be present and an avid supporter. Her family’s success and growth secured her legacy. Sainte Helene had a devotion to her family and her faith which went beyond measures. She loved going to church and it can be said that it was her favorite past-time. This is a woman who would spend an entire night in prayer and jubilation. She strutted to every gospel songs sung by the choir.
Sainte Helene had many monikers: matriarch, warrior, dancer, comedian, gardener, discipliner, regal, and everything an individual strive to be. She was very much admired by her family and friends. Sainte Helene truly lived as if every stride was a celebration.
Sainte Helene is survived by her 6 children, her youngest brother Neyor, 20 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren. As well as, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and 5 in-laws.
