Obituary for Deacon William S. White Sr.

Our beloved Deacon William White, Sr. was born in High Point North Carolina on November 5,1925, to the late Sylvester White and Nellie White. Deacon White grew up in Harlem NY in a close-knit family oriented community. This would lay the foundation for the family man and community activist he would later become.

Deacon White Sr. attended Pace University and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Deacon White Sr was drafted into the United States Airforce and served as a Radio Operator and a Aircraft Maintenance Worker. Later on he received an honorable discharge.

On December 7,1941, Deacon White Sr gave his life to Christ and joined the Abyssinian Baptist Church under the late Dr Adam Clayton Powell Jr. While attending Abyssinian Baptist Church he served in The Philharmonic Glee Club and was a member of the Harlem Political Group. It was in this group Deacon White was trained to be a leader and community activist.

Deacon White Sr had the privilege to meet and talk to Dr Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X, at different events in Harlem. In the 1960’s Deacon White Sr moved to Queens and worked for the United States Postal Service. He retired after 26 years of service.
While in Queens he was united in holy matrimony to his lovely wife Grace Lee White. This union was blessed with two children William White Jr and Mark White. Under the influence of trustee Emma Robinson

Deacon White Sr joined the Mt Olivet Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. Philip Hawkins. In 1970 the Mt Olivet Baptist Church Education Ministry was organized by the late Rev Charles T Smith. Deacon White Sr was the founder and appointed president of the Olivet Education Committee. The Olivet Education Committee provided scholarship stipends to high school seniors who were planning to attend the accredited institution of higher learning.

While serving in the O.E.C Deacon White Sr was very instrumental in the growth and success of the organization. In 1987 Deacon White Sr joined The Douglas King Regular Democratic Club and served as a chairman of the Membership Committee under the late Assembly Woman Barbara Clark.

A member of The King Solomon Lodge Started The Hollis Ave. United Block Association
Awarded Charter Member Since 1962 by the Mt Olivet Baptist Church
Was recognized for 40 years of service for furthering the education of young people.
Received an award for outstanding support and dedication Grand parenting mentoring in the PAL after school program (1999-2000’s)

In closing Deacon William White Sr lived a life of honor, loyalty, dedication & service. Through all his accomplishments he remained humble and faithful. His beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of his daughter Joyce White and his sons William and Mark White, cousins , friends, and as he would always say a host of adoptive sons, daughters and grandkids.
