Obituary for Mira Sylvania Pemberton

Mira Sylvania Pemberton was born on September 21, 1934 in Brownhill, Nevis. She was the first child of Arnold Chiverton and Evelyn Herbert. She had a total of 18 siblings from both her mother and father separately. As a child, she enjoyed sewing from her mother. She worked as a pastry chef in the Four Season Hotel.

In 1969, she left St. Kitts and moved to Puerto Rico. While living in Puerto Rico, she worked as an early childhood care provider. Even though Mira was far away, she always remembered to provide for her children back home in St. Kitts. She later married Janes Pemberton and received her surname.

In 1985, she traveled to New York and decided to make the city her permanent home. She started working two jobs, one as a home health aide and the other at Penco. At Penco, she began working as a pen laborer and eventually worked her way up to become a supervisor. She made most of those pens that you’re writing with today!

By 1989, her dreams came through and she was able to have most of her children in New York with her. After long years of hard work, she was able to achieving her piece of the American Dream.

In 2004, Mira retired from Penco at the age of 70, but continued her service as a home health aide for 3 more years. She spent most of her retirement tending to her garden. She loved growing fresh fruits and vegetables to cook for her family.

Well into her 70’s she remained independent and continued her regular activities. After going to her own doctors appointment, she realized that she didn’t remember which direction to walk home after coming off the bus. In 2018, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. It was discovered that she had the disease for about 7 years before symptoms were noticeable.

She was not a party goer. She found her peace and solace attending church every Sunday, no matter the weather. She was soft spoken and quiet and her kids complained when speaking to her she would watch them smile. Those who were especially close to her knew she loved cooking, sewing, and baking. Her specialty was her Black Cake.

Mira passed away at the age of 86 on November 10, 2020.
