Obituary for Mary E. Scott

Mary E. Scott was born Mary Elaine James to Chizzie and Edmond James on November 29, 1931 in Florence, South Carolina. Mary received her formal education in Florence Public Schools, starting with Holmes Elementary School and graduating from dear old Wilson High, where she was inducted into the Wilson High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame.
Mary was a twin to Martha Renetta James Whack. In Florence, they are affectionately known as "The Twins". The oldest by 19 minutes; Mary embraced her role as the oldest. When necessary, she would go into her "protective mode," taking the lead to ensure that she and Martha achieved their optimal outcome. Starting with the day she demanded that her father Edmond James buy she and Martha the Sally Walker shoes promised; up to and including giving her the 25 cents needed to return the cheaper ones he had bought, and ensuring that she and Martha got their school lunch money every week.
Mary may have appeared to be the quieter of the twins. However, when necessary, she was like E.F. Hutton, when she spoke, the family listened. When you needed her, she was always there (i.e. Buck’s First Suit).
Mary lived her life to the fullest enjoying a love for fashion and traveling to exotic places. She was a great cook and excellent baker (like her momma). We will miss her blueberry dumplings, apple crumb and cheese cakes.
Mary was married to Charles M. Scott on August 25, 1960. To this union was born a loving daughter, Helen Octavia Scott, affectionately known as "Penni" because of her size at birth.
Before her brief illness, Mary made a point of “Living Well” in spite of any trials and tribulations she faced.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Chizzie and Edmond James, two sisters, Edna Mae "Sister" James and "Baby" Ruth James, and her buddy, Randolph Phillips.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Helen "Penni" Scott, sister, Martha James Whack (Eugene); three half-sisters, Louise White, Helen Thomas (Dozier), Evelyn Miller (John), nephews; Edmund "Buck" James (Lois), Eldeen (Deen) Johnson (Jackie), Walter Johnson (Carolyn), Phillip Johnson, Gregory Phillips, Justin James (Toni), Shamon Johnson (Rebecca), DeAndre Johnson, Greggory Phillips, Marcus Phillips (Demeria), Stuart Willoughby: nieces, Carol Johnson, Shanna James (Frank), Dionne P. Morse (Joel), Chizzie Denise Johnson, and Philesha Carol Johnson; and a host of family, cousins, and lifelong friends.
