Obituary for Jerry Black

Jerry Black transitioned from this life after a long illness on June 6, 2022. He was born to the late Thomas and Lina Black on November 22, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York. He had 3 sisters, Vivian (deceased), Sylvia (deceased), and Loretta.
Jerry was educated in the New York City school system, and after leaving school, he worked for his father's private sanitation company, B & B Carting. In 1958, he married Annette Boatwright-Black, and they had two children, Jerry Black, Jr., and Monica Black. Shortly after, he was drafted into the army and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. Upon leaving the service, Jerry worked and later retired from the United Postal Service after 40+ years of service. Seventeen years ago, he married his current wife, Jewell Black, and they resided in Queens, NY.
Jerry’s passion was photography; He attended the New York Institute of Photography and owned and operated a photography studio in Brooklyn, New York for many years. He was a well-known wedding photographer and videographer. He later expanded his business and became an expert in photo restoration and art. His work was sought after by professional photographers and lay persons. Before his illness, Jerry was an active member of the Southeast Queens Camera Club and Fresh Meadows Camera Club. As his photography skills developed, he served as an instructor and mentor for other photographers. His work was displayed in art shows at various venues throughout New York City.
Jerry loved his family and was very involved with collecting their history through photographs and video. He attended most family functions, recording events and interviewing family members to collect historical facts that could be later distributed to future generations. It was rare to see Jerry without a camera in his possession and if you met him, more than likely he took your picture. Not only did he live life, but he captured it through the lens of his camera. Even during his illness, when he could not photograph his journey, it was recorded in his sketches.
Jerry attended Immaculate Conception Church in Queens and was a frequent visitor to Merrick Park Baptist Church with his wife.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Jewell, his daughter, Monica Black- Boyd (Shelly), Jerry Black Jr., stepchildren, Andrew Dancey III, Janeen Wilson (Jeron) sister, Loretta Taylor, former spouse, Annette Black with whom he shares 12 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

May he rest in eternal peace.
