Obituary for Clairemont Henry

Clairemont Henry (aka known as Monty and Clem) was born on February 15, 1926, to West Indian parents, Mr. Edward Henry and Esperinia (Essie) Lawrence Henry, in New York City, in the area known as San Juan Hill. Both parents migrated from British West Indies around 1906. Clairemont was one of three children, a sister Ileana Mary Henry, and an older half- brother, Edwin Henry. During his childhood years, his mother exposed him and his sister to literature and the arts. She would take them to Sheep Meadow in Central Park, to listen to the Goldman Band as they played classic jazz on Sundays. Like his mother, both he and his sister developed a liking for the arts, which grew into a massive collection of books and classical jazz music. He attended De Witt Clinton High School and was later drafted into the US Navy and served for a year and six months, later receiving an Honorable Discharge as a Seaman First Class. He later met and married Josephine Simmonds, on May 1, 1949. From this unity, they had two daughters: Karen Marie Henry, and Ingrid Claire Henry. Clairemont and Josephine raised their daughters in the Bronx for thirteen years and later moved to Queens, Rochdale Village. In 1967, Clairemont and Josephine lost their oldest daughter at the age of seventeen and he also lost his father the same year. After being married for 23 years, Clairemont and Josephine’s marriage ended in 1972. After his discharge from the military, Clairemont started working for the US. Postal Services, responsible for sorting and running the mail through the railroads between New York City and Buffalo, New York. After being transferred to several locations, he was permanently stationed at the John F Kennedy Airport Branch where he became a supervisor until he retired in 1981, after thirty-four years of services. After retiring from the US Postal services, he began working for the NYC Transit Authority as a token clerk. He worked this job for twenty-one years, and at the age of 76 years, he permanently retired from the workforce. While working at the JFK Post Office, he met Doretha Bryant, and in March of 1975, he married Doretha. For 47 years, they shared a beautiful love for each other, and he became stepfather to her daughters, Shelia Bryant, and Priscilla Jacobs who he loved and treated like his own. They enjoyed being around their blended family, as it grew with five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Clairemont was friendly, compassionate, and quiet. He didn’t mind hanging out with others, but preferred being alone. During his down time, he loved to listen to classical jazz music, watch baseball and western movies, read, and play word games with friends on the computer. Clairemont was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend to all.
