Elijah Smalls was born on October 30, 1930 to the late Elijah and Henrietta Smalls in Brooklyn, New York. He had one sister, Dorothy Evans, who preceded him in death.
Elijah attended New York City public schools in Brooklyn. He graduated from Chelsea Vocational High School in Brooklyn. After high school, Elijah enlisted into the United States Army on September 8, 1950. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged on July 16, 1952. He received a Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service Medal.
Elijah completed a tour with the 2nd Artillery Division in the Korean War as an ammunitions handler and had his share of fighting in the war. Three months after Elijah was honorably discharged from the United States Army, he participated in the Golden Gloves as a boxer. Many newspaper articles were published about his boxing skills- one newspaper article’s title states, “Smalls Leads Queens Trio into Golden Gloves Semis”, at the 103 Precinct Police Athletic League (PAL). Elijah was employed at Macy’s department store in Herald Square for many years, before transferring to Macy’s in Queens. He retired from Macy’s after 30 years of service.
Elijah met Barbara Johnson when they were teenagers; he attended her Sweet 16 birthday party. They reconnected when she was twenty-four years old. Elijah and Barbara were married on February 28, 1956. They had two children, Dorothy and Phillip. They celebrated sixty years of marriage on February 28, 2016. After a short period of illness, Elijah was called home to be with the Lord on June 16, 2016.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Barbara, daughter Dorothy Taylor (David Taylor, Sr.), son Phillip Smalls, grandchildren Chimère Neal, and David Taylor, Jr., sister-in-law Ellen Johnson and a host of family and friends.
