Rosa Lucille Scott was born on April 9, 1942 in Harlem hospital. She left us prematurely, to join her beloved parents - Dorothy and Glenarva Meridith and beloved Great Aunt - Rosa Sawyers - on February 8, 2017. Her friends and family are gathered here today to celebrate her life.
Rosa grew up in New York City. In the era of Elvis Presley and poodle skirts, she was a cheerleader, and always hosting parties in the basement of her Queens home on 144th Street. Rosa was Miss Popularity, surrounded by boys, whom she called her make-believe Brothers, and was the pride of her parents, when she graduated at age 17 from Jamaica High School in 1959.
Rosa achieved her dream of helping people by becoming a Registered Nurse. She was one of three Blacks to graduate from Queens Nursing School. Rosa tended to patients during a 30 year career, which included becoming the first Black head nurse at Astoria General Hospital, until she was injured on the job. She was always an eager learner, whether it was later earning a bachelors degree from Hunter College or taking Yoga classes.
But Rosa's greatest accomplishment and joy was being a mother and grandmother. She sadly leaves behind her daughter, Robin Scott, her son, Raymond Scott, his wife Myrtle and their 3 children and Rosa's beloved grandchildren Trey, Leah and Devin. She will also be missed by her only sister, Denise Meridith. Rosa will be laid to rest with her parents and name-sake great aunt Rosa Sawyers.
