Obituary for Walter Smith

Walter  Smith
For God so Loved the World that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life… John 3:16 (King James.)

Mr. Walter Smith, was born in Darlington South Carolina on July 7 1951, he is the son of the late Ella Gandy Allen, Jerome Smith Sr. (biological father) and Ted Allen (Step-Father.) Walter transitioned to eternal rest, July 30 2017 after a valiant fight with cancer. Walter quietly gave his life to Christ on June 11 2017. He was educated in Darlington, S.C. His mother relocated to New York and it became their home. He was affectionately known as Skinner to family, James to friends and Smitty to co-workers. He met his first wife Hilda (Miranda) Wingate and relocated to Washington, D.C. Under this union, they shared the blessing of two children; Andre Nazario Wingate (step-son) and Kenya LaCharne Smith (his daughter.) Walter met Grace Annunziata who became his second wife and under this union, they had James Daniel (Scooter) Smith, his youngest child and son. He worked and retired from the Department of Recreation, Fields and Landscape Division.

Walter was a loving father and grand-father. He enjoyed Fishing, Planting, Photography, Cooking, Traveling, Sports, and Family gatherings and was known to be a “Great Debater.” He loved Motown music. His favorite songs were recorded by Marvin Gaye (Let’s Get it On and Sexual Healing) and “How I Wish it would Rain” by the Temptations. Walter never said “Good-bye”—he would end visits and phone conversations by saying “See you Later.”

Walter is preceded in death by his mother and fathers, Ella and Ted Allen and Jerome Smith, Sr. respectively; his brothers Henry (Hippy) Gandy, Jerome (Jerry) Smith II, Randolph (Randy) Smith, Benjamin (Bink) and William (Pap) Allen. His remaining sibling is Ms. Yvette Allen of Bronx New York. Others survive to cherish his memories and to carry on his legacy are his children, Mr. James (Erica) Smith of Queens NY, Ms. Kenya Smith and Andre Nazario Wingate of Charleston, WV.; five grand-children, Miss NySha Kiayrra and NiCole Tiayrra Smith of Charleston WV; Little Miss Haley and Master Jordyn Smith of Houston Texas, Master James Smith Jr. and Marcus Talbert Jr. (step-son of James Smith, Sr.) and five great grand-children. He leaves his devoted nephew Jerome Smith III, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He leaves his former mother and father-in-law, Mrs. Retha Wingate and Mr. Arthur Linen; brothers-in-law Ernest Wingate Sr. and Edward Muldrow and sister-in-law Ishmalita Mack Johnson of Bronx New York.
