Obituary for Bertha J Smith

Bertha J Smith
Bertha Jane Smith was born in Elmore County Alabama to Henry Chatman and Charity Birmingham on May 4, 1923.

She was the third of five children. She attended and graduated from Sweetwater School in Alabama. After graduating she relocated to Cleveland Ohio where she worked at an Independent Towel and Laundry Co. for 15 years. She left Cleveland Ohio in 1970 and came to New York, where she met and married Levi Smith who proceeded her in death on June 30, 1988.

Shortly after his death, she took part in raising her a niece Tiffany Salter who she loved very much.

Bertha was a very outgoing person and loved to make people laugh. She came to Christ at an early age, in 1943 she was a member of Sweet Water Baptist Church.

Bertha was the manager and a member of the Smith Gospel Singers for over 35 years. She joined Freewheel Baptist Church in 1971 under the leadership of the late Rev. Emmit Gates.

She had maintained that fellowship now under the leadership of the Rev. Ronald Simpkins, for the past 20 years.

She leaves to cherish her memory: One daughter-Shirley Parish of Jamaica, N.Y. and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends, too numerous to mention.
