William E.  Chapman
William Earl Gardner was born on April 10, 1938 to Ophelia Greene and Leve Gardner in Kingston, North Carolina. Ophelia later met and married James L. Chapman who adopted William and raised him as his very own son. William was affectionately known as Bill or Billy.
William spent his early childhood years in North Carolina and later moved to New York City. William attended New York City Public School and John Adams High School.
Although William left North Carolina, he never left his country roots. He loved country music and the blues. Two of his favorite songs were “Family Tradition” by Hank Williams and Chickens in the Barn. William was an avid Guitar player and would often play for his family. William also loved to barbecue and would often grill for family and friends.
William worked various jobs over the course of his life to include the Long Island Rail Road and his own cleaning and maintenance business.
William loved life and people and he made many friends through-out the course of his life. His philosophy on life was simple, just live it.
William married Hazel Christine Allen on March 9th 1957. William and Hazel had 9 children together (seven sons and 2 daughters).
William passed away on Friday September 29, 2017 at Nassau Community Hospital. William was 79 years old.
William is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hazel; Children: James, Marion, William, Maryanne, Jesse, Darron and Wesley; 2 Daughters in law: Debbie and Lisa; Grandchildren: Danielle, Elena, Ramel, Daron, Allen, Kevin, Jasmine and Imani; Great Grandchildren: Jamel, Breona, Daryl, Jaylen, Josiah, Brandon, Maniyah, Kevin Jr., William Jr., Jordan, Johnathan, Kaylani and Jaxson; 4 Sisters in law: Virginia Alston, Joan Gazis, Elizabeth Hogan and Paula McCalun; Brother in law Marvin Allen and his wife Theolia and a host of Aunts, Uncles and Cousins in North Carolina.
William was preceded in death by Sons: Kevin and Clifton, Grandson Jason and Daughter in Law Patricia.
William will be forever loved and missed.
