Obituary for Gwendolyn Delores Booker

Gwendolyn Delores Booker
Gwendolyn Delores Booker was born on July 8, 1928, in New Rochelle, New York; to Frank and Charlotte Booker. She was one of four children; and was predeceased by two of her siblings, a brother Christopher, and a sister Elise.

She attended Girls Commercial High School in Brooklyn, New York from which she graduated.

She was united in holy matrimony to William Rawlingston Welsh III, and this union produced an only daughter, Sharon Diane.

Gretchen, as she was affectionately referred to by her daughter, (and for that matter, it was the only name known by many), devoted her energies in spite of various adversities, in singlehandedly raising her daughter. She saw her reflection in her daughter as well as some of the same caring qualities that attracted her to the needs of others. Her mission in life was to provide some measure of comfort and support to those who had a need.

Gwendolyn was gainfully employed by Electronic Hardware Corporation, as an office manager, starting her career back in 1964. She subsequently retired approximately four years ago.

She recognized that there was more to life than just living and dying and placed her faith and trust in God’s provision, the Lord Jesus Christ. For about 45 years, she was engaged with the activities at Bethany Baptist, located at 148th Street in Jamaica, NY; serving in various capacities including being the church treasurer. She later joined the Bethany Baptist Church, at 157-11 111th Avenue, Jamaica, NY and remained there until her home call.

She shared a special relationship with her grandson, Erik, who understood clearly the benefits of being an only grandson. She looked out for his interests and did everything to ensure that all his needs were met.

After a brief illness, it pleased the Lord to relieve her of her earthly sufferings and to call her home.

Left to mourn her loss are her daughter Sharon, son-in-law Sam, her grandson Erik and her sister Barbara, her nephews and nieces, extended family, many friends, and her church family.
